Kim Eun-jong-ho planted the Korean flag high above the quarterfinals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023. Just as his older brothers did four years ago, the South Korean teenager has once again conquered Ecuador to reach even greater heights in the tournament.

South Korea defeated Ecuador 3-2 in the round of 16 of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 at the Estadio Unico Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero, Argentina on Sunday (Feb. 2). A combination of organized attacking and impeccable finishing sealed the victory.

Korea started the game in a 4-3-3 formation. Bae Jun-ho, Lee Young-joon, and Kim Yong-hak were in the attack, while Kang Sang-yoon, Lee Seung-won, and Park Hyun-bin were in the back. Park Chang-woo, Kim Ji-soo, Choi Seok-hyun, and Choi Ye-hoon formed the back line, with Kim Jun-hong in goal.

The team fell behind early in the match, but gained momentum with back-to-back goals. In the 11th minute, Lee Young-joon opened the scoring with a brilliant right-footed volley off a cross from Bae Joon-ho, and eight minutes later, Bae Joon-ho scored another goal with a fantastic individual effort, beating the goalkeeper.

The 2-0 lead set a good tone, but a lack of concentration led to a late goal. In the 31st minute, Park Chang-woo fouled Kendry Paes and conceded a penalty kick. It was an unnecessary play inside the penalty box. The team faltered after conceding a penalty kick goal to Justin Cuero.

South Korea then thickened their defense to protect their lead. They blocked Ecuador’s attacks with their feet and used stalling plays in the attack to solidify the victory. They survived the six minutes of extra time to secure the win.
